Research Statement


Dr. Edgardo Ortiz Sánchez is a community health scientist with nearly ten years of experience conducting participatory research in Puerto Rico, Indiana, and other regions of the Midwest in the United States of America. His work has focused on HIV prevention and care, Sexual Health and Wellbeing, and Social Stigma through Intervention Research and other Translational Sciences. His current research comprises the development of a community health intervention focused on opioid and other drugs misuse and HIV in the rural Midwest and Appalachian regions of the United States. 

Other research interests of Dr. Ortiz Sánchez include intersections of HIV prevention and care, sexual subcultures among gay and bisexual men, and identity on populations made socially vulnerable. Dr. Ortiz Sánchez is completing a post-doctoral training in HIV and Opioid misuse on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and completed a PhD in Public Health with a major in Health Behavior and a specialized minor in Translational Sciences, and an MPH in Health Education. He has also completed post-graduate training in Community-based Participatory Research.
